Northallerton Area Guide
As previously mentioned, Northallerton is the capital of Hambleton, which has been voted as the best place to live in Yorkshire, with record low crime records, pretty market towns and quaint villages. It’s so good, that even the Vikings used it as an organisational base.
Northallerton itself is a thriving and busy market town, full of life – Northallerton boasts fantastic independent shops, bars and restaurants. The world famous Betty’s also has a café restaurant located on the high street. One of the oldest pubs in the town hosted Charles Dickens, who was visiting whilst writing Nicholas Nickelby.
Locally, landmarks such as Mount Grace Priory are well worth a visit and is the best preserved Carthusian house in England. Local villages such as Osmotherly are also well worth a visit, but can get busy on sunny, weekend days. The Yorkshire Dales and The North Yorkshire Moors are also just a stone’s throw from Northallerton, whilst the big cities of the North are easily commutable thanks to great rail links.
